Serious Illness Statistics to be Aware of

When it comes to talking about illnesses or new superbugs, the world is on tender hooks, having experienced 2020’s lengthy global pandemic. While serious illness may not be a common worry for most. Statistics show that six in ten Americans live with at least one chronic disease. Commonly seen illnesses include heart disease, cancer, or diabetes. These illnesses alone are the leading cause of death and health care costs to date. So, what can you do to stay fit and healthy? Being aware of the common risk factors and illnesses out there can help you adapt your lifestyle for the best health and fitness level you can achieve. 

Due to the combination of schools and businesses closed for a significant period of time, and unrestricted living back in full swing this winter. This flu season is feared by experts to be a challenging one. Looking at Pre-pandemic levels of the flu, it still caused 13 million medical visits, 380,000 hospitalizations and 28,000 deaths in America alone. With this year’s season's unique factors and a combined wave of Covid, it's no wonder experts fear that this winter there will be severe cases of the flu.
According to the World health organisation Non-communicable diseases Caused 74% of all deaths globally.  NCD’s are chronic illnesses that are not transmitted from one person to another. These illnesses include cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, cancer, and respiratory diseases.
While statistically these serious illnesses are more commonly faced by the elderly and vulnerable. NCD’s are still affecting people of all ages. With 17 million NCD deaths happening before the age of 70. Research shows that unhealthy lifestyles play a role in the severity of these common illnesses. Common lifestyle factors include tobacco use, insufficient physical activity, or an unhealthy diet. 
Recent studies show that those that suffer from hypertension are on the rise. Commonly known as high blood pressure and usually affects those between 30-79 years old.  This is an alarming increase so hypertension should be on your radar. Particularly because it increases the risk of kidney, brain, and heart diseases. Of particular concern is nearly half of people who suffer from high blood pressure don’t know about it. Hypertension can be hereditary, but having a healthy lifestyle and diet can contribute to reducing high blood pressure.  Reducing and managing your stress also plays a big part in reducing high blood pressure and the risks associated with it. 
As an expat you can be more vulnerable to suffering from chronic stress and mental health-related illnesses. Around one billion people worldwide suffer from Mental health-related illnesses. Alarming new data on mental health show it is now ranking 2nd among global health concerns, overtaking individuals suffering from cancer. On average 76% of global studies agree that mental health and physical health should be considered equally important. But only 33% of health services in each country tested treat them equally. The respiratory syncytial virus also known as RSV is rapidly spreading across the world, and is expected to be causing high rates of infection this winter. It causes common mild cold and flu symptoms. But can also cause a cough or in severe cases difficulty breathing. This infection is seen to be more of an issue for unvaccinated individuals and young children. This year has seen hospitalizations from RSV rise 10 times higher than in previous years. Unlike the common flu and Covid 19, there is no vaccine or universally prescribed treatment. These increasing rates of RSV indicate that this illness will be around for a while, so it's one you should be aware of.
