The power of positive psychology

 August 2023

Positive psychology aims to teach us how to flourish and live our best life.

Positive psychology is a relatively new field of study that focuses on what makes people thrive and excel. While other branches of psychology focus on mental illness and abnormal behaviour, positive psychology is centred on helping us become happier. Simply put, it is the science of what makes people happy. Scientific studies have shown that a positive outlook can help us enrich all the aspects of our life, and is linked with better health, longer life, and greater overall wellbeing.

Learn to look on the bright side every day with these six positive psychology tips. And the more you practice them, the better your mental health will be.

Research has shown that gratitude practices can increase feelings of wellbeing, improve relationships, and even boost physical health. Make a gratitude list of as many things you can think of that you are grateful for. Continue to add a new item to the list every day, and see how it changes your mindset for the better.
According to medical experts,  mindfulness and meditation improve mood and boost positive feelings. Mindfulness has been effective in treating a wide range of mental health issues, and can also be used as a tool for enhancing wellbeing. Spend some time everyday having a moment of peace and tranquillity. Setting aside some time everyday to meditate improves your mood, increases sleep quality, and reduces stress. Build and maintain relationships with family, friends, and other members of your community. Connecting with others has been linked to a range of positive outcomes, including better mental health, increased happiness, and improved physical health.
Spend a few minutes each morning thinking about your best qualities to start your day off on the right foot. Positive affirmations help raise levels of self-esteem, reduce stress and promote a more optimistic outlook. Having a higher and stronger sense of self-worth promotes self-care and positive feelings.
Research shows that the happiest people are those that capitalise on their strengths. You are likely to be happier when your personal strengths are put to use in the various aspects of your life, such as your job, relationships, and hobbies. Write down your strengths that you are already aware of and other strengths that you may be discovering. Are there ways that you could incorporate your strengths more often into your personal and professional life?
Performing acts of kindness for others has been proven to make people happier. These can be as simple as holding the door open for someone, making a coffee for a colleague, helping an elderly person cross the street, or smiling at strangers.
