How much does international health insurance cost?

12 April, 2020
International health insurance is designed for people who are living and working overseas. Much like traditional health insurance back home, international insurance is there for you when you need it the most. At Allianz Partners, we offer insurance for families, expat professionals, students and more.
The cost of international health insurance plans can vary from person to person. International health insurers need to consider many factors when assessing the cost of your insurance. These factors commonly include:
The cost of healthcare in the country you are moving to will have an impact on the cost of your insurance. For example, if you are moving to the United States where healthcare is more expensive, your premium is likely to be higher than if you are moving to Europe. To mitigate these costs for the consumer, many healthcare providers offer insurance by geographic location. Allianz Partners offer expat health insurance that excludes medical cover in the US at a reduced premium when compared to worldwide cover.
How you choose to pay for international health insurance can impact the overall cost. Many insurers include a percentage charge for paying in quarterly or monthly instalments. Even the card you use to pay can have an impact. To save money, pay annually by bank transfer or by using a debit card.
Many providers take your personal circumstances into account when quoting for your international healthcare cost and your age plays a part in this. In general, the older you are, the more healthcare you are likely to require so your premium may be higher. In this regard, we always recommend looking for a plan that is right for your stage of life.
If you require a policy that has the highest level of protection, then you’re going to be paying more. If this is the case for your family, it's important to remember having the right plan in place will save you more in the long run.

Much like the amount of coverage you need, one of the biggest factors that affects the overall cost of your policy is the extra benefits you need in your plan. Some options include:

  • Maternity cover
  • Extended outpatient cover
  • Dental cover
There are ways to reduce the cost of your health insurance. We have included many of them in this useful article.
