Smoothies can be a delicious and nourishing way to start the day, and smoothie bowls are often a more satisfying meal than simply drinking it from a glass. Use the recipe below to keep the consistency thick and add different textures with the toppings to provide an element of crunch.

This recipe balances the three macronutrients (protein, carbohydrates, fat) and is a real treat for your gut microbiome, with a gut-friendly combination of fibre from the flax seeds, polyphenols from the blueberries, probiotics from the yoghurt and prebiotics from the banana.

  • 1 banana
  • ½ cup blueberries, fresh or frozen
  • ¼ cup plain yoghurt (can use dairy-free)
  • 1 heaped tbsp nut butter of choice (e.g. peanut butter, almond butter)
  • 1 tbsp ground flax seeds
  • ½ cup milk of choice
  • Optional: 1-2 tbsp vanilla protein powder
  • Toppings of choice e.g. kiwi, blueberries, almond butter, mixed seeds
  1. Add all ingredients to a blender and blend under a smooth liquid is formed.
  2. Pour into a bowl, decorate with toppings and enjoy!
