Setting up a home water filtration system is an economical and practical way to ensure that your family has access to clean drinking water.

On previous blog posts, we talked about ways to save water at home  and creating a smart water home . But what if you could source your own water?

We’ve talked before about the risks of water-based pathogens, and why clean water matters, both for kids and for adults. But additionally, home filtration systems are far more economical than buying bottled water. Indeed, bottled water can cost roughly 2,000 times the price of tap water! And that’s before you get into the carbon footprint of buying and using a piece of plastic every single time you buy a bottle of H20.

A home filtration system, on the other hand, can offer the convenience of tap water without the risk.

A relatively simple installation is an under-sink water filtration system. This is suited to someone confident with DIY and plumbing.

Systems vary, but typical steps for installation are as follows:

  1. Turn off your cold-water supply.
  2. Disconnect the cold-water tubing from the faucet.
  3. Install a T-dapter.
  4. Connect the tubing to the T-adapter.
  5. Install the faucet (skip this step if your filtration system has its own faucet).
  6. Mount the filtration system.
  7. Connect it to your plumbing.
  8. Turn the water back on.
  9. Flush the filters.

If you live in an area with compromised water safety, a whole-house water filter installation might be necessary.

Whether you’re sourcing water from a well or somewhere else, home water filtration system installation is usually a job for professionals, but if you feel confident in achieving this task, the overall steps are:

  1. Choose the location for your whole-house filtration system.
  2. Gather and organize tools and accessories.
  3. Shut off your water (and drain the pipes by running a faucet).
  4. Remove a section of pipe.
  5. Install tees and valves.
  6. Install the main filter unit.
  7. Switch on water and check for leaks.

Setting up a water filtration system is especially popular for those who use a well. This water can be a convenient, inexpensive source of hydration for a household, especially if it’s on your own property. However, it can also be potentially dangerous, as the well water is not treated in the same way that water from a main supply line is, and it might carry bacteria and pathogens. Hence, the need and popularity of filtration systems for well users.

Here are some common questions that arise on the subject of well water filtration for the home.

Yes, in fact many manufacturers sell kits specifically for members of the public to use. However, it will take some skill and confidence in DIY.
Typically, it would take 2-4 hours. Though this may take longer, depending on the experience of the person doing it and the complexity of the task (age, layout and location of property, for instance).
Replace filters regularly (per the manufacturer’s instructions). And sanitise at least once a year. Just like with any sophisticated product, try to follow the manufacturer's instructions as closely as possible.
